Not everything is numbers

To think the world under the perspective of numbers gives us a comfort to our human insecurity, but it can also bring many mistaken projections. We will see....

During this World cup period it is almost impossible to flee to the subject soccer. In one of those TV channels, I watched an interview of the player Roberto Carlos commenting the friend's path Cafú in the Brazilian Soccer Squad. According to Real Madrid's player, Cafú was to said have a better performance even better than the one of Pelé! Are those indicators trustable? Where it can be evaluated the creative potential of a person?

Not many years ago in the academic area, the Brazilian professors were forced to publish scientific articles in relevant publications in order to assure their earnings. Is quantity friend of the quality? The Brazilian Ministry of Education took so long to remember that the answer is no!

Let's return to Cafú figures to understand a phenomenon, which is not Ronaldo (!): what is information? Are data and information the same thing? Why a brilliant play, among many others from Pelé in the Cup of 70, although many times copied is still unique?

According to the statistics, São Paulo F.C. was a better team than Santos during Pelé's Era, or Flamengo of Zico times and even Barcelona! Why not to see the episode from another perspective: what was significant in the 60's? How the tournaments took place in that time? And in what conditions (techniques, politics and social)? Just a remark for the youngest and for those not keen on soccer: it was rather usual in the 80’s the South American players to take stones with them to throw on the opponents during the matches valid for Libertadores Cup. The game between Flamengo and Cobreloa in 1981 serves as an example, but let's skip this and concentrate on the main topic.

Data is a cold figure without significance if it is taken without a context. Separately data means nothing. Information is data on a web evaluated through an analysis, which some call of "operative intelligence". In other words, Cafú will not to be a better player than Pelé even if he became Champion, because Pelé will be eternal, not only for the more than 1000 goals that he scored (in fact, Romário has been trying to equal the mark...), but for the accomplishments through his entire life. He is an authentic entrepreneur, he innovated! To portray a Monalisa today is not quite original, as well as there is not brilliant in elaborating anatomy agreements, but at that time that Leonardo of Vinci made them... it is completely different!

Only to consolidate the thought, try to disentangle from the sporting passions and to see on the other hand: what the titles conquered by Michael Schumacher represent? Was he better than Fangio, Senna, Piquet, Prost, Lauda, amongst other great pilots? I would dare to say the Schumacher has an own style but nothing that make him the best pilot of all times, if one will take only in account the many titles that he won!

Indicators need to be thought and not simply swallowed without arguing. Be careful, therefore, with the commentators that supposedly say to have a scientific " approach" on such matters! In businesses, then, the situation can be even worse.

It is relatively common within the industrial sector the adoption of Statistical Control methods. Quality control has been disseminated by all areas of economical activity. Ok, it helps to support decisions. But it cannot be only that. Many opinion researches are accomplished in a mistaken way. They indicate tendencies and directions that may complicate more than to help the entrepreneur. Just figure out if you would evaluate your relationships by the amount of dates that you had, not for the real meaning of them to you. In the era of uncertainties, the statistics may serve to appease our human being insecurity..., but we will leave this comment for another day.

May the peace and the respect to the diversity prevail!
